Mazzone makes pitch to be Yankees or Mets coach

Leo Mazzone is looking for a job in New York.

The former Braves pitching coach said Thursday he would love to take on the same job with either the Mets or Yankees. Mazzone was asked on Sirius/XM’s Mad Dog Radio if there was any particular job he would be interested in.

“Yeah, there certainly is,” Mazzone said. “And it has New York in front of it, too. I mean, it can be in the American League or the National League.”

Mazzone was given a lot of credit for being Bobby Cox’s right-hand man in Atlanta and helping form the Braves dominant pitching staff of the ’90s that included Greg Maddux, John Smoltz and Tom Glavine.

The Yankees fired pitching coach Dave Eiland this week, while the Mets still have Dan Warthen in place in that role. It is unknown if Warthen will keep the job when the Mets new manager takes over. Sandy Alderson is expected to be officially named Mets GM on Friday, and his first responsibility will be finding the manager to replace Jerry Manuel, who was fired at the end of the season.

Mazzone took over as Orioles pitching coach in 2005, but did not enjoy the same success he did with the Braves and was fired in 2007.
