O’s blue-state blues in NY

ALBANY — President Obama’s approval rating has fallen to its lowest point ever in heavily Democratic New York state — where a plurality of voters now say they “prefer someone else” to be elected chief executive in 2012, according to a poll released yesterday.

The Siena College survey showed Obama, who carried New York with 63 percent of the vote in 2008, is viewed favorably by 55 percent of voters, including 74 percent of Democrats.

But just 43 percent, including 62 percent of Democrats, said they wanted to re-elect Obama, while 47 percent, including 83 percent of Republicans and 50 percent of independents, said they wanted someone else.

The poll found 87 percent of black voters, but just 35 percent of white voters, saying they wanted Obama to win a second term.
