CK’s Calhoun enjoys visit to Carolina

When he arrived at school Monday morning, Omar Calhoun had a better answer than most of his classmates to the what did you do this weekend question.

The junior guard went on an unofficial visit to North Carolina with his father, Omar Sr. They toured the Chapel Hill campus, spoke to the Roy Williams, his coaching staff and players and took in the Tar Heels 96-91 win against Long Beach State at the Dean Dome.

“It was nice,” Calhoun told The Post. “I had a great time with the coaching staff. It was a great environment out there. It was just nice to be around the players and have them tell us about Coach Williams and how he’s like a players coach. I just enjoyed my time, checked out the [Carolina Basketball] museum and stuff like that.”

Calhoun, ranked No. 38 nationally in the Class of 2012 by Scout.com, said Williams was first in contact with him during the summer, watching him play at the Peach Jam and the AAU nationals.

“They saw me play over the summer, but they said they’re going to check me out during the season so I’ve just got to make sure I get better,” Calhoun said. “He said he just wants to continue to watch me, see my improvements and how I’m getting better.”

The 6-foot-4 junior has offers from Pittsburgh, Villanova, Louisville, St. John’s, West Virginia, Miami, Virginia, Seton Hall, Rutgers, Maryland, Oklahoma State, Arizona and Vanderbilt. He’s also receiving interest from Notre Dame, Georgetown, Kansas, Tennessee, Georgia Tech, Marquette, Kentucky and LSU, as well as North Carolina.

“It’s definitely exciting, to see a prestigious program like that is spectacular, but you just want to stay humble and hungry and that’s what I’m trying to do,” said Calhoun, who was particularly impressed with The Carolina Basketball Museum.

Despite a published report that said Calhoun is set to visit Connecticut shortly, Calhoun said he has no offers planned in the immediate future.

“I’m just trying to focus on the season right now,” he said. “If I want to visit a school along the way then I’ll do that, but not right now.”

The Post’s preseason first team All-City selection will next take the court Friday when Christ the King, ranked No. 4 in the country by USA Today, meets No. 21 Christ School (N.C.) in the City of Palms Classic, which features six nationally-ranked teams.

“A lot of people say this is the best high school tournament in the country,” Calhoun said. “We just want to make sure we go out there and show everyone that we can play and that the ranking we have is for a reason.”
