LI man who fired at firefighter was on his way to commit mass murder: cops

Long Island cops said a man who crashed a truck into a utility pole and then opened fire on a ambulance crew appeared to be on his way to carry out a mass killing.

Nassau County Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey said the 31-year-old man had strapped an assault rifle to his chest and extra ammunition to his forearms with wristbands.

He had six weapons in all, including a Tec-9 automatic pistol behind the seat of his truck.

Cops did not release his identity, but they believe he recently moved to Long Island from Florida.

Shooting erupted Tuesday at about 10 p.m. in Bellmore after the driver hit a utility pole.

When the volunteer ambulance crew arrived, he fired at least eight shots, wounding one of the emergency medical technicians.

Police responding to the crash then shot the man when he threatened them.

The injured EMT and volunteer firefighter Justin Angell remains in stable condition.

Angell, 20, of North Bellmore , wrote on Facebook this morning: “im still in icu but I feel ok just got up and walked a bit.”

Cops said he was shot once in the upper torso.
