Canarsie school gets a reprieve

City education officials granted an indefinite reprieve yesterday to one of the most staunchly supported schools on its chopping block, PS 114 in Brooklyn.

Critics had blamed the Department of Education for the Canarsie school’s decline after officials backed Principal Maria Peña-Herrara, who allegedly mismanaged the school into a $180,000 debt and saw test scores plummet on her watch.

She was removed in 2009, but the DOE had still called for the school’s closure until the 11th-hour change of heart.

The vote to close PS 114 had been set for today.

Plans to open a charter school in the same building will continue to move forward.
