‘Idol’ won’t be live

In a rare change of protocol, “American Idol” will tape this week’s first perform ance featuring the top 13 — rather than air it live.

Since the series began 10 years ago, perform ances by the “Idol” final ists have always been aired live.

But the longtime “Idol” Web site mjsbigblog.com reported yesterday that Wednesday night’s show is being taped tomorrow night instead.

No reason was given immediately.

But it is believed the show was taping early because of technical dif ficulties getting a proper sound mix — the balance between the singers and the back-up band — on to the air.

As well, squeezing all 13 contestants into a two-hour show with new hosts — Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler — who are relatively unfamiliar with live TV, might require some editing.
