Cuomo cool to Senate LIFO plan

Gov. Cuomo reacted coolly to a revised Senate Republican plan that would both speed up adoption of more rigorous teacher evaluations and scrap the “last in, first out” teacher layoff policy this year.

“We’re reviewing it,” a Cuomo spokesman said.

But a top education aide to Mayor Bloomberg said the governor should back the amended proposal, which will be in the Senate GOP’s budget resolution to be voted on as early as today.

Deputy Chancellor John White also said the Senate plan would give the city the authority this year to use merit-based criteria to get rid of the lowest-performing teachers instead of the newest instructors, if an agreement cannot be reached with the teachers union.
