Moments following LI police shooting loaded with emotion

The frantic moments following the friendly-fire shooting that cost a Long Island cop his life were captured on a dramatic audiotape made public today.

At one point, a cop can be heard shouting, “MOS [member of service] shot in the face!”

This comes as a police union official said someone yelled “gun” moments before Officer Geoffrey Breitkopf was killed on Sunday.

Nassau County PBA President James Carver said Breitkopf was fatally shot by an officer from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority police.

The shooting happened in Massapequa Park, several minutes after Nassau officers fatally shot a knife-wielding emotionally disturbed man.

Breitkopf was assigned to the elite Bureau of Special Operations. He was arriving after the first shooting and had a rifle slung under his arm when he was killed. Authorities believe the MTA officer thought Breitkopf posed a threat.

A Nassau County police spokesman did not immediately comment. The MTA also declined comment, citing an ongoing investigation.

Breifkopf’s funeral will be held Friday.
