Try veganism for yourself!

Looking to try veganism? Start here:

■ Do your research: Kelly Peloza, author of the cookbook “The Vegan Cookie Connoisseur,” recommends books by Isa Chandra Moskowitz. PETA.org will also send beginners a starter kit to learn more about veganism.

■ Try new restaurants: Call ahead or look online to check ingredients. “If you already know what you want, no one will raise an eyebrow,” says BabyCakes owner Erin McKenna, author of the upcoming vegan- and gluten-free cookbook “BabyCakes Covers the Classics.”

■ Go to community events: Go online to find like-minded vegans in your area, says Melisser Elliott, author of “The Vegan Girl’s Guide to Life.” Also check out New York’s first Vegetarian Food Festival on Sunday at the Altman Building.

■ Try your hand in the kitchen: “Start by eating whole foods,” McKenna says. “It’s really easy to make a meal that’s really simple…if you rely on herbs and good fats.”

■ Shop local: If you avoid processed and prepackaged foods, you’ll discover that many items at your grocery store are vegan. McKenna says to fill in the rest by shopping on Amazon or hitting a health-food store.
