Gaugler, Cardozo win Francis Lewis boys volleyball tournament

One of coach Danny Scarola’s youngest teams is trying to win a fourth straight PSAL boys volleyball title for Cardozo. But the Judges did a lot of growing up Saturday.

Sophomore outside hitter Tyler Gaugler had 16 kills and five aces to lead Cardozo to a 24-26, 25-19, 25-18 win over Stuyvesant in the Francis Lewis tournament championship game in Fresh Meadows. Gaugler, the younger brother of former Dozo star Todd and Bryant standout Troy, was named tourney most valuable player.

Leandros Katsigeras had seven kills and five blocks, freshman Isaac Hwang had 10 kills and sophomore setter Youngsoo Shin had 35 assists for Cardozo, which defeated CHSAA power Regis in the semifinals. Stuyvesant, which is expected to have a breakout season, beat Grover Cleveland in the semis.

Cardozo has won the last three PSAL city championships and has not lost a league match in seven years. Scarola also guided the school’s girls volleyball team to its first championship since 1981 in the fall. The Judges boys graduated all-city players Stanley Martinez and Kevin Ha from last year’s team.
