Mike mail pitch to end LIFO

Mayor Bloomberg is going postal on the “last in, first out” issue.

Hizzoner explains his anti-LIFO crusade in a new leaflet on teacher-layoff rules that hits mailboxes tomorrow.

The colorful, two-sided mailer explains “why Mike Bloomberg is fighting to end” LIFO. His office would not say how much the fliers cost or how many are going out.

LIFO “may lead to our kids losing some of their most effective teachers,” reads the circular.

“This law must be changed, for our kids’ sake,” it continues. “Layoff decisions should not be about how long a teacher has served, but rather how effective they are in the classroom.”

The mailers — Bloomberg’s second batch on the issue but the first that’s “in depth,” according to his spokesman — join a TV spot about LIFO that first hit local stations about a week ago.

Bloomberg is stepping up his war against LIFO as 4,600 teacher layoffs loom. Albany approved a $132.5 billion budget last week with drastic cuts to education aid.
