Wright off to hot start for Mets

PHILADELPHIA — With a rusty Carlos Beltran still trying to find his form in the middle of the lineup, David Wright has even more on his shoulders than usual.

Through four games, it doesn’t appear to be bothering him.

The third baseman had a successful comeback season a year ago, but he managed to do something last night he didn’t do all of last year: get four hits in a game.

“David is on fire,” manager Terry Collins said after Wright tied his career-high in hits two games after delivering three of them — including a homer and a game-winning single in the 10th — against Florida on Saturday.

BOX SCORE

Scott Hairston, who hit two batters back of Wright in the Mets’ 7-1 win over the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park, is seeing his new teammate up close for the first time this season and was most impressed with what he saw against the Phillies.

“The first thing I noticed about him when I got here was how focused he is,” Hairston said. “To take pitches the other way three times and get hits every time like he did, that can be hard to do in batting practice sometimes. But he has the mentality of a great hitter.”

Last night that resulted in a two-run single when the Mets erupted for six in the third, all off of Cole Hamels. Wright, batting .412 through four games, stole a base and then singled again in the fourth before adding a double in the sixth and another single to right in the eighth.

That all came after he struck out on a 95-mph fastball on the outside corner from Hamels with two on in the first.

“I couldn’t deliver in the first,” said Wright, who also scored twice. “I was fortunate to get another opportunity.”

The four hits were his most since June 24, 2009, against the Cardinals.

“He’s in one of those stretches that whenever he swings the bat, something happens,” Collins said. “And Carlos is gonna get going. And when he does, we’ll be that much better.”

Wright was also pleased to see the offense do its job without the benefit of a home run.

“We’re not going to be successful sitting back and waiting for a three-run homer,” Wright said. “We have to do what we did against [the Marlins’] Javy Vazquez.”

And what they did again last night.
