Well, New York didn’t land one of the three retired NASA space shuttles — but it will become the permanent home to the ship that started it all.
The Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum was named yesterday as the future home of the Enterprise — the 1976 prototype that never flew in orbit, but was used for landing and other tests.
The ship will be displayed in a glass enclosure at Intrepid’s berth on Manhattan’s West Side, where it will doubtless attract thousands of visitors a year.
Which is why NASA chose to site the Enterprise here — not to mention Intrepid’s history as a recovery ship for some of the earliest manned space flights.
