Mets call up Isringhausen, Igarashi to help struggling bullpen

GM Sandy Alderson saw enough during yesterday’s Mets bullpen meltdown to revamp the relief corps after the loss — bringing in some familiar faces.

Jason Isringhausen and Ryota Igarashi will be back with the Mets tonight when the Amazin’s host the Rockies.

To make room, the Mets designated right-hander Blaine Boyer for assignment and optioned outfielder Lucas Duda to Triple-A Buffalo.

“We need some innings,” Alderson said. “We’re not getting the results we need.”

So the Mets will go with a 13-man staff, possibly until Jason Bay returns from his strained rib cage, which could be by next weekend.

“Right now, we need the arms,” Alderson said.

Igarashi, a bust for the Mets last season, has pitched twice for Buffalo, picking up a save.

Isringhausen remained in Port St. Lucie following spring training, battling back issues. But Alderson said the 38-year-old is healthy.

“There’s no guarantee that will be the case a week from now, or a month,” Alderson said. “But he’s put in a lot of work and deserves an opportunity. It’s time for us to give him a shot, and it’ll be a good story seeing him back.

“It will be the Iggy and Izzy show [tonight].”

Manny Acosta was not an option to be recalled, because it’s been less than 10 days since he cleared waivers, and Alderson added that since the righty hasn’t pitched, he wouldn’t be ready without more innings in Buffalo.

Ronny Paulino was moved off the restricted list and onto the 15-day disabled list before yesterday’s game and should be ready to play in games in Port St. Lucie sometime later this week.

“We have a program set up for him,” Alderson said of the backup catcher who was sidelined with anemia.

“We foresee him playing some games in Port St. Lucie, as well as [Triple-A] Buffalo and expect to have him back at the latest by the Washington series in Washington on April 26.”

The clock didn’t start on Paulino’s DL stint until yesterday because he was still serving a 50-game suspension for testing positive for PEDs last year.

Alderson expects Paulino to begin playing games by Thursday.

Both Paulino and Bay were scheduled to take batting practice yesterday in Port St. Lucie, and Alderson said Bay “continues to be pain free.”

Jose Reyes picked up another three hits in yesterday’s loss, his fifth multi-hit game of the season.

He has started seven straight games with either a hit or a walk. His first-inning bunt single extended his hitting streak to eight games, during which he’s hitting .368 (14-for-38).
