Arizona ‘honor killing’ dad sentenced to more than 30 years in prison

PHOENIX — An Arizona man who ran over and killed his daughter in what law enforcement officials described as an honor killing was sentenced to 34-and-a-half years in prison Friday, The Arizona Republic reported.

Faleh Hassan Almaleki, 50, used his Jeep to run down his 20-year-old daughter, Noor, and her boyfriend’s mother, Amal Khalaf, in Peoria, Ariz., in October 2009. He fled the country after the attack but was eventually detained in London.

Almaleki was convicted in February of second-degree murder. Prosecutors had argued that Almaleki was so enraged with his daughter for being “too westernized,” that he ran her down, intending to harm her, when he spotted her out with Khalaf two years ago.

At issue throughout his trial was whether Almaleki intended to hurt his daughter on the day that he ran her down in a Phoenix-area parking lot.

Prosecutors argued that Almaleki plotted and planned to kill his daughter, saying that he had felt dishonored by his daughter, who had moved out of his home earlier that year.

They said he set out to find Noor that day in Oct. 2009 and, when he did, he gunned the engine, using the only “weapon” he had at his disposal to kill her. The police estimated that Almaleki was driving at over 20 miles per hour (32 kilometers per hour) when he hit the two women.

Detectives testified that, under questioning by police, Almaleki said he intentionally ran over his daughter.

Almaleki was sentenced to 16 years in prison for the death of his daughter and 15 years for the aggravated assault of Khalaf, according to The Arizona Republic. He was sentenced to three-and-a-half years for leaving the scene of the accident.
