Our Phil of Tiger: Golf needs respect

THE ISSUE: Tiger Woods’ reputation as the world’s premier pro golfer.

I totally disagree with Mark Cannizzaro’s article, “Golf Needs Tiger” (April 12).

Golf needs current players like Phil Mickelson, oldtimers like Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player, and young ones like Rory McIlroy and the winner of this year’s Masters, Charl Schwartzel.

Tiger Woods remains what he has always been — an arrogant, rude and distasteful person who has never had any respect for the game of golf or its players and fans. He’s a great player, but that’s about it.

In my opinion, golf needs Mickelson — a man who truly loves the game and is its greatest ambassador.

To win last year’s Masters, considering all he must have been going through with his family’s illnesses, is the stuff of which legends are made.

Mickelson will win another major before Woods does, because he loves the game.

You hear it in his voice when he gives an interview. You see it when he walks the fairways and acknowledges the crowd with a smile and a wave.

It’s not a look that says, “I deserve this.” It’s a look that says, “I am very fortunate and blessed to be playing a sport I love.”

Woods just loves Woods.
