A working mother tries to remain employed as a business consultant while her severely autistic teen daughter distracts her with a series of angry eruptions in the indie “Fly Away.”
Sensitively rendered, the movie is a showcase for Beth Broderick as the mom, Greg Germann as a charming neighbor who flirts with her and a fully immersed Ashley Rickards as the tantrum-prone teen, who appears to be on the intellectual plane of a 2-year-old.
“Fly Away” is more situation than story, though, and the Germann character’s welcoming, almost saintly vibe doesn’t fit. Why would a handsome bond trader want to get involved with this family? At its best, the film is a convincing study that underplays such wrenching moments as the mom taking a bath that reveals all the bruises she’s suffered in her daughter’s violent outbursts.
