St. John’s lands Chicago guard, eyes two more recruits

St. John’s yesterday gained a key recruit and lost a marginal one, and coach Steve Lavin zeroes in on two difference-makers beginning this weekend.

Guard Phil Greene of Chicago, who had given the Red Storm a verbal commitment, officially signed, bolstering the backcourt.

Forward Dwight Meikle of Long Island, who would have had a hard time getting minutes because of the signings of three other elite forwards, was granted his release.

Lavin now goes after two of the biggest prizes out there. God’s Gift Achiuwa, a 6-foot-8 power forward from Eric Community College, visits St. John’s this weekend. He already visited Washington and Cincinnati and could get involved with Kentucky.

Jamari Traylor, a 6-8 post man from Chicago who’s enrolled at IMG Academy in Florida along with Greene, and Achiuwa would give the Red Storm the rugged inside players needed to battle in the Big East.

The signing of Greene and release of Meikle leaves St. John’s with three scholarships.
