Pols push for registry of domestic abusers

Batterers convicted of domestic violence would be required to register like sex offenders under new legislation proposed yesterday.

A domestic-violence-offender database would allow people in relationships to learn if a partner has a history of abuse, said state Sen. Eric Adams (D-Brooklyn), a co-sponsor of the bill.

The legislation would also help warn stalking victims when an ex moves into the neighborhood.

“Sometimes, people don’t know if they’re sleeping with the enemy,” said Adams, who sponsored the bill along with Assemblywoman Vanessa Gibson (D-Bronx) and Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries (D-Brooklyn).

Adams said the proposed legislation was inspired by last week’s death of Sarah Coit, 23, who was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend, Raul Barrera, a control freak with a violent past.
