Brain gaining

CUNY’s kids are on a roll — a national honor roll.

City University of New York students won 26 competitive academic awards and merit scholarships this year — the most in CUNY history.

Leading the way are brainy students from CUNY’s Macaulay Honors College program, which was established a decade ago to woo academically gifted students.

Macaulay students reeled in 16 of the 26 awards and merit scholarships — or 62 percent of the total.

This year’s prestigious Rhode Scholar winner, Zujaja Tauqeer, is a member of the Macaulay program at Brooklyn College.

All four CUNY winners of the Barry Goldwater Scholarships to encourage careers in math, science and engineering are affiliated with the Macaulay program: Mark Barahman, Joseph Cammarata, Celine Joiris and Johnson Shiuan-Jiun Ho.

Ayodele Oti, one of two Truman public-service scholarship winners, is a Macaulay student at City College.

CUNY Chancellor Matthew Goldstein established the program in 2001, and it now enrolls 1,400 students.

Aside from qualifying for a four-year tuition-free CUNY education, Macaulay students also receive a $7,500 stipend that can be used for internships and to study abroad.
