DC police gave escort to NY Rangers, official says

WASHINGTON — District of Columbia police say they provided a police escort to the New York Rangers before and after last weekend’s playoff game at the Verizon Center.

Commander Hilton Burton, who heads the department’s special operations division, said Tuesday the team was accompanied on Saturday from its hotel in Washington to the arena and then to Union Station after the game against the Capitals. He says the team’s owners were also escorted after the game to the city limits. He says the Rangers reimbursed the city roughly $840.

The escort was provided less than a week after an escort given to actor Charlie Sheen before a performance in DC attracted considerable attention. After the Sheen escort, Police Chief Cathy Lanier said escorts were not given to celebrities or made widely available.
