Davis injured in Mets’ win over Rockies

DENVER — Just when it appeared the Mets might go an entire day without bad news from the infirmary, it was David Wright by TKO over Ike Davis at Coors Field.

The Mets received a solid performance from Mike Pelfrey to beat the Rockies 4-3 and snap a two-game skid, but played the final five innings without Davis, who left the game after colliding with Wright on a pop-up near the pitcher’s mound in the fourth.

Davis, who was diagnosed with a strained left calf muscle, wore a boot on his left foot following the game and said there is a chance he will need an MRI exam today. He originally thought the injury was to his Achilles, but said the team’s medical staff indicated otherwise.

Davis initially remained in the game, after limping back to his position, but following the completion of the inning manager Terry Collins decided to remove him from the game.

“The only way I’m going to get off the field is if I’m going to hurt the team,” Davis said. “The way I was moving at first, I wasn’t going to cover any ground.”

Though Davis tried to downplay the injury, saying there is a chance he might play today, Collins said Davis was “hurting badly.”

Troy Tulowitzki hit the pop-up with one out in the fourth. Wright and Davis converged in front of the mound, and Wright made the catch, sending Davis to the ground in the process.

Trainer Ray Ramirez examined Davis, who stayed on the field until the inning concluded. Daniel Murphy eventually replaced Davis at first base, with Justin Turner entering the game to play second.

“We didn’t really collide that hard,” Davis said. “I just rolled my ankle or something.”

The Mets can’t afford to lose Davis, who leads the team with 25 RBIs, for even a short period. Already this week, the team was jolted to learn that Chris Young has a torn anterior capsule in his shoulder and could miss the remainder of the season.

Wright is enduring his own aches and pains as he battles a sore back — an injury he incurred on April 21 in a tag play at third base against the Astros’ Carlos Lee. On top of that, there is no return in sight for Angel Pagan, who has been on the disabled list for three weeks with a strained oblique muscle.

Pelfrey (3-3) allowed three runs — all on solo homers — over 6 2/3 innings before the game was halted by rain for 50 minutes. Jason Isringhausen replaced Pelfrey as play resumed and worked a scoreless inning before getting the ball to Tim Byrdak with two outs in the eighth.

Byrdak struck out Todd Helton, and Francisco Rodriguez pitched a scoreless ninth for his 10th save in 11 opportunities.

Davis’ two-run single in the first gave the Mets an early lead against Jason Hammel (3-2). Pelfrey then delivered the biggest hit of the night, a two-run double in the fourth that snapped a 2-2 tie.

“I’m terrible at the plate and I went up there and said, ‘Hey, I’m going to swing at the first pitch,’ ” Pelfrey said. “Luckily it found a gap.”

Pelfrey encountered trouble in the second, when Tulowitzki homered leading off and Seth Smith added a solo blast with one out to make it 2-2. Carlos Gonzalez homered in the sixth for Colorado’s final run.
