LONDON — Rapper Snoop Dogg wants to produce a talent competition TV show in the vein of “American Idol” and “The X Factor” but aimed at finding new hip-hop stars, British newspaper The Guardian reported Tuesday.
Speaking at a press conference in London to promote his new album “Doggumentary,” Snoop — whose real name is Calvin Broadus — praised “Idol” and “The X Factor” as “great shows,” but said he believes there is room on the air for a talent competition “straight directed to the hood … at people with no money, just talent.”
He said he was hoping to make a deal with a network “to find America’s hottest hood artists.”
Initially a controversial protege of former N.W.A. member Dr. Dre, Broadus, 39, has branched out into film and television roles, an MTV sketch comedy show, a reality series on E! and product endorsements.
He told reporters in London that he hoped to open a chain of supermarkets. “But I’m going to call them Snoopermarkets,” he said.
