Giants’ Manning rooting for Burress’ NFL return

Eli Manning is glad to see former — and possibly future — Giants teammate Plaxico Burress’ lengthy prison sentence is finally set to expire next month.

“Obviously he’s served his time, plus some,” Manning said last night at a Guiding Eyes For The Blind charity event in While Plains.

Burress is scheduled to be released from prison June 6. He will have served 20 months of a two-year sentence after pleading guilty to weapons charges following an incident at a nightclub in November 2008 when a gun he was carrying in the waistband of his pants went off, shooting him in the leg.

Manning did not rule out the possibility of Burress, who caught the winning touchdown pass from Manning in the Giants’ 17-14 win over the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, returning to the Giants following his release.

“I’m excited that he’s getting out, and if the Giants or another team give him a shot, I’ll look forward to getting him back into football,” Manning said.

Manning said that he was pleased with the two weeks of informal workouts he organized for members of the Giants’ offense in Hoboken recently. But he said that there are no plans at this time to hold any additional workouts.
