Surely the low-water mark in the recent tide of dismal wedding-themed comedies, actor Dermot Mulroney’s painfully unfunny directing debut improbably casts Mandy Moore as a newlywed shrink confronted with the breakup of her parents’ marriage.
Moore’s new hubby (wooden “Twilight” hottie Kellan Lutz) feels neglected as his spouse tries desperately to bring about a reconciliation before her 30th-anniversary party for dad (James Brolin) and mom (Jane Seymour). They split after mom learned about a long-ago infidelity (and a secret that anyone who manages to stay awake will see coming an hour away).
Except for Brolin as an unlikely born-again Jew, nobody fares well under Mulroney’s ham-fisted direction. Not Jessica Szohr as Moore’s sister, nor Christopher Lloyd and Colleen Camp as wacky marriage counselors. A voice cameo by Julia Roberts only serves to remind viewers that Mulroney co-starred in “My Best Friend’s Wedding” a long time ago in a universe far, far away.
