Majority find that Weiner should resign following scandal: poll

Get out!

Nearly half of city voters say disgraced Rep. Anthony Weiner should resign from office after admitting he exchanged steamy texts and pictures with women over the Internet and then lied about it, according to a new poll.

A poll conducted by SurveyUSA for WABC-TV/Channel 7 found that 46 percent of New Yorkers want Weiner to quit his post, while 41 percent said he should stay in office.

Another 13 percent said they were unsure of what the married Weiner should do, the poll found.

Weiner did worse among male voters, with 50 percent of them saying Weiner should resign.

The poll found that 42 percent of women agreed that Weiner should pull out. Forty-three percent of men and 39 percent of women said Weiner should stick it out.

An overwhelming majority of those who have taken a nypost.com poll believe Weiner (D-Brooklyn/Queens) should quit office.

According to a NY1-Marist Poll released tonight, 51 percent of New York City voters believe Anthony Weiner should not resign. Thirty percent disagree and think he should step down, while 18 percent remain unsure.

When it comes to the 2013 race for mayor, the poll shows that voters want Weiner to stay out. A majority — 56 percent — do not want him to run.

The polls comes a day after a sniffling and “deeply ashamed” Weiner ‘fessed up on Monday to spending the past three years exchanging steamy online messages and sex-fueled phone chats with six women — sending some of his most tawdry sexts after marrying his high-powered wife last year.

Weiner acknowledged that he had engaged in inappropriate contact with six women over the course of three years through social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook and occasionally over the phone.

He said he had never met or had a physical relationship with any of the women and was not even sure of their ages.

Weiner also said he had never had sex outside of his marriage.

Weiner said over and over during a news conference that he had made “terrible mistakes” and done “a very dumb thing” for which he alone bore responsibility.
