No matter what happens to him, Rep. Anthony Weiner won’t be left empty-handed.
Records show the disgraced congressman is sitting on a campaign war chest almost as large as his libido, with $4 million in cash remaining from his canceled run for mayor in 2009.
Under the rules, Weiner can either give the money away to charitable or politically connected purposes, or simply let the account accumulate interest until he’s ready to start spending on another campaign.
Things would get complicated if Weiner tried to transfer his city funds to his federal account, which had $365,670 as of March 31, to gear up for a possible re-election run for Congress next year. “He couldn’t just write a check,” said Eric Friedman of the city’s Campaign Finance Board. “He’d have to issue refunds and ask contributors to make new contributions to his congressional account.”
