Jessica back to reality

Jessica Simpson is returning to her reality-show roots.

Simpson, who rocketed to a new level of stardom in 2003 on MTV’s “Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica,” will star as a “guide” on NBC’s upcoming reality show, “Fashion Star.”

The show, hosted by supermodel Elle MacPherson, will follow 14 fashion-savvy contestants as they battle to win a multi-million-dollar contract to launch their own fashion label in three of the country’s largest retailers.

It will be taped in front of a studio audience — and will feature dancers, live music and models, according to reports.

In addition to her singing career, Simpson has launched a fashion empire that includes nearly 24 products (including sportswear, denim, watches and fragrances).

Simpson and her now-ex-husband, Nick Lachey, headlined “Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica” for three seasons.

At one point, it was the most popular show on MTV, before running its course and ending in spring 2005.

Simpson and Lachey divorced the following year.

Simpson also hosted VH1’s “The Price of Beauty” last year.

No word yet on when “Fashion Star” will premiere.
