‘We own the economy’

Real New Yorkers tell the truth.

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the new head of the Democratic National Committee and a Forest Hills native, sure did this week.

“We own the economy,” she said of her party.

“We own the beginning of the turnaround, and we want to make sure that we continue that pace of recovery.”

Candid? For sure.

Poised to give President Obama and his political team fits?

Absolutely for sure.

We know the blame-Bush impulse is in Obama’s DNA, and perhaps the economy will turn around before the 2012 election — but Wasserman Schultz’s willingness to take custody of what is at present a shipwreck is mystifying.

Yes, she represents Florida’s Broward and Miami-Dade counties now — but her New York candor is refreshing.

This was no gaffe, either.

Wasserman Schultz made similar comments earlier this week: “I’m going to take ownership right now, because we’ve begun to turn the economy around.”

Well, if 9.2-percent unemployment and a level of extended joblessness that the country hasn’t seen since the end of World War II is a “turnaround,” what would a quagmire look like?

Still, true Big Apple grit led Debbie Wasserman Schultz to let everyone know who’s “clearly responsible” for the mess.

Truly, you can take the girl out of New York, but you can’t take New York out of the girl.
