Jets’ Revis tempers optimism regarding labor war

Darrelle Revis was one of the leaders of the Jets’ 40-player group that practiced on their own at FDU-Madison to stay sharp during the NFL lockout. But just because the star cornerback wants the team to stay prepared for a labor agreement doesn’t mean he assumes one is coming any time soon.

“It’s really tough. It could go a lot of ways. They could think about just sitting this whole year and get ready to do the offseason thing and start it off like that and go into the next year,” Revis said at last night’s Modell’s Hike For Heroes charity event. “It’s so late right now, and stuff is just getting pushed back so much.

“I think that’s the best thing, is for us just to work out. That’s all you can do, because you don’t know when you’re going to get that call. Something could happen at midnight tonight, it could happen a week from now, you never know.”

Revis ran the defensive drills with linebackers Bart Scott and David Harris at the workouts, held Monday through Wednesday at a New Jersey college near the team’s headquarters. But despite positive reports of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and several owners meeting with NFLPA chief DeMaurice Smith and several players in Maryland, Revis said he wasn’t any more encouraged now than he was several weeks ago.

“No. You hear stuff, but I think its people just talking, like rumors,” Revis said. “But like I said, I think you just need to stay working out and focused and go forward and when you get that call, great, be ready to go.”

Though free agents Antonio Cromartie and Braylon Edwards were predictably no-shows, and Santonio Holmes made a brief appearance but did not work out, Revis said several other players showed up despite not being under contract.

“They still want to be a part of the team,” Revis said. “For guys to come in here that aren’t even under contract, that speaks volumes.”

Revis had praise for another out-of-contract player, Plaxico Burress. The former Giants wideout, recently released from prison, called the idea of playing for the Jets “appealing,” and Revis sounded like a man who wouldn’t mind having him for a teammate.

“I know Plax can still play. I know he’s a hungry player,” Revis said.
