In Subway salaries, Mets trail by $85M

The Mets have played the underdog in New York far more often than not in recent years, but that will be even more true in this weekend’s Subway Series — at least when it comes to payroll.

Even with the likes of Derek Jeter ($15 million) and Rafael Soriano ($10 million) on the disabled list, the Yankees’ 25-man roster for this weekend’s games figures to have about an $85 million advantage over their Mets’ counterparts, $163.4 million-$78.6 million.

The Mets will be without high-priced stars like Johan Santana ($22.5 million) and David Wright ($14 million), but the overachieving team has just four players making $4 million or more, while the Yankees have 10.

And the disparity could be even greater later in the season, if the Mets fall out of wild card contention and unload players like Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes or Francisco Rodriguez and the Yankees add to their payroll by trading for more veterans to make a postseason push.
