‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2’ has record breaking opening

LOS ANGELES — Some moviegoers may not yet know if Harry Potter will win his final battle against Lord Voldemort, but one thing is certain — he already dominates the vampires of “Twilight.”

“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” took in a staggering $43.5 million Friday morning from midnight show times in its US opening, obliterating the previous $30 million record set by “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” Deadline reported.

The final “Potter” film’s record-breaking opening was expected after movie ticket service Fandango said more than 6,000 midnight showtimes were sold out in advance, leaving theaters scrambling to add 3:00am screenings.

“Records will fly out the window this weekend,” an executive at producer Warner Brothers said.

The next target for the movie starring Daniel Radcliffe as the titular wizard will be to surpass the biggest ever single-day box office haul of $72 million, which was earned by “The Twilight Saga: New Moon.”

Deadline predicted the final “Potter” film could make up to $180 million in total in the US over the three-day weekend.

Internationally, ‘Potter’ has already made enough to fill Gringotts bank. It has pulled in $82.5 million in 43 countries outside the US over the past two days — and that was without counting major markets like the UK, Spain and Brazil.

The flick opened in an additional 16 countries, including those, on Friday.
