New City teen mauled by bear in Alaska

A Rockland County teen was mauled by a brown bear during a survival course in Alaska, authorities said today.

Joshua Berg, 17, of New City, was taking part in a 30-day backcountry course held by the National Outdoor Leadership School 120 miles north of Anchorage when his group came across the brown bear and her cub, officials said.

Berg and Samuel Gottsegen, 17, of Denver, were both critically injured during the attack. They are being treated at an Anchorage hospital.Two others were also injured in the attack.
