A man was killed early this morning in a gruesome, wrong-way head on crash on the Long Island Expressway service road in Queens.
The 37-year-old victim was a passenger in a livery cab heading east on 58th Road in Maspeth when a Chrysler Sebring heading west on the one way street slammed into the vehicle.
The impact of the 6:30 a.m. crash broke the frame of the Lincoln Towncar and sent the victim flying into the driver’s lap.The deployed airbags of the Sebring were covered in blood, according to witnesses.
Two men were seen running from the smash-up, though one with a large gash on his forehead returned for medical treatment, witnesses said.
Cops are hunting for the driver of the Sebring, who fled the scene.
The cab driver, 59, and the victim were taken to Elmhurst General Hospital, where the 37-year-old was pronounced dead on arrival.
The 44-year-old passenger from the Sebring was also taken to Elmhurst General, where he was in stable condition. No one has been charged.
Residents said they heard only a tremendous impact, and looked out to a terrifying sight.
“The driver from the limosine, he was in very bad shape, blood all over,” a neighbor said.
The accident shutdown the service road near 69th Street in Maspeth, snarling traffic throughout the neighborhood.
