‘Trip’ coach Alosi resigns from Jets

Sal Alosi, the Jets’ strength and conditioning coach and mastermind in the sideline tripping incident this season against the Dolphins, has resigned, the team announced yesterday.

“After speaking with Sal, he decided that it is best for him to tender his resignation at this time,” Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum said in a statement. “We appreciate all of Sal’s contributions during his tenure with the team. He played an invaluable role in our success and established what we feel is one of the better strength and conditioning programs in the NFL.”

Alosi was docked without pay for the rest of the season and fined $25,000 by the team for sticking out his knee to trip Dolphins special teams player Nolan Carroll during a game at New Meadowlands Stadium on Dec. 12.

Alosi was suspended indefinitely by the team a few days later after acknowledging he ordered players to form a wall along the sideline. The Jets were fined $100,000 by the NFL for comments about the incident that involved the Patriots.

“I’m thankful to have been a part of the New York Jets,” Alosi said in a statement. “I am especially grateful to Mr. [Woody] Johnson, Mike Tannenbaum and Rex Ryan for allowing me the opportunity to be a head strength and conditioning coach in this League.

“I have many fond memories, including earning my first NFL job in 2002. After the events that have transpired, I feel it’s best for my family and me to look for a fresh start. I wish nothing but the best for the entire organization.”

ESPN.com reports the Jets would not reveal if Alosi signed a confidentiality agreement as part of his departure. The website says his salary was “about $200,000” per year.
