UFT bigwigs cash in

Even as Mayor Bloomberg warns that aid cuts could force him to fire more than 4,500 teachers, the union that represents them is enjoying a surge of six-figure salaries, The Post has learned.

The number of United Federation of Teachers employees and executives raking in more than $100,000 in annual compensation soared 38 percent over the past six years, a Post analysis of the powerful teachers union’s federal labor filings found.

The $235 million-a-year labor behemoth shrugged off the recent economic turmoil to increase its six-figure staffers to 95 last year from just 69 in 2005, according to the analysis done with help from NYPIRG.

President Michael Mulgrew led the pack in 2010, with a base salary of $238,847. Other top UFT earners include CFO David Hickey ($230,086) and secretary Michael Mendel ($212,237).

UFT spokesman Dick Riley said union pay hikes are tied to city teacher contracts.
