Three injured in multi-vehicle accident on Long Island

UNIONDALE, N.Y. — A 42-year-old Long Island man is under arrest on drunken driving charges after police say he crashed his van into two cars and a bus. He and two other people were injured.

Nassau County police say Richard Santiago of Hempstead was driving on Hempstead Turnpike Sunday night when he crashed his van into a 2004 Mercury, a 2011 Mazda and an empty MTA bus. The impact caused the bus to slam into the side wall of a McDonald’s restaurant.

The 51-year-old bus driver suffered facial and knee injuries and the suspect sustained a head injury. The 27-year-old Mercury driver suffered unknown injuries. All were taken to an area hospital.

Police charged Santiago with driving while intoxicated and other charges.

It’s not immediately clear if he had a lawyer.
