Water dog rescued

Eagle-eyed NYPD harbor cops rescued a young German shepherd from certain drowning yesterday when they spotted the dog struggling to stay afloat two miles off Manhattan Beach.

Charlie, an 8-month-old pup, jumped from his owners’ car at around 7 p.m. and ran into Rockaway Inlet.

“Harbor just happened to see him and went and pulled him out,” a police spokesman said, adding that the rescuing officers, Benjamin Reiver and Edward Carr, used a special “dog noose” to haul the tiring pooch into the boat.

After Charlie was rescued, police canvassed the shore and quickly found his worried owners, who live nearby.

Cops said that after 40 minutes of paddling, Charlie showed signs of exhaustion but was in overall good condition.
