Jets’ Edwards faces court date in Cleveland

Where he’s going to play this year is not the only thing Jets free-agent wide receiver Braylon Edwards has to worry about.

Edwards has another court appearance, this one on Aug. 8 in Cleveland Municipal Court to find out whether he violated his probation there, according to a court spokesman. He could face six months in jail, although a lesser penalty such as a fine is more likely. A punishment may not be handed out at this hearing.

Edwards pleaded guilty Friday in Manhattan to a misdemeanor count of driving while intoxicated. The penalty for that charge was a $500 fine and a suspended license.

When Edwards was arrested on Sept. 21 he was still on inactive probation in Ohio, stemming from a fight at a night club in 2009. He pleaded no contest in January 2010 to a misdemeanor aggravated disorderly conduct charge after being accused of punching LeBron James’ friend. He received 18 months of probation and a $1,000 fine. He also received a suspended 180-day jail sentence, which he could have to serve if the judge finds him in violation of his probation.

According to a source, the Jets held a meeting yesterday morning with the organization’s business and football staffs. Jets owner Woody Johnson
told them the team would pay them the money they lost during the lockout due to pay cuts and furloughs. The money was in their bank accounts by the conclusion of the meeting.

Johnson thanked everyone for their support and patience during the work stoppage. Jets coaches took a 25 percent pay cut during the lockout, and business-side employees took a one week furlough per each month of the lockout.

In a voicemail left for Jets season-ticket holders, coach Rex Ryan
indicated the team will throw the ball more this season.

“The ground and pound offense is ready to roll,” Ryan said. “[Mark
] Sanchez
is going into his third year. I can’t wait to see his improvements.”
