The first lady of leisure

WASHINGTON — Don’t look for any moss under the feet of First Lady Michelle Obama, who spent an enviable 42 days traveling on vacation over the past year.

While her husband comes under fire for a planned getaway this month, the first lady has wisely spread out her own down time, the White House Dossier blog has found.

She spent 10 days on Martha’s Vineyard last August and 17 days in Hawaii for Christmas. She also took trips to Panama City, Fla., Latin America and South Africa, where she also conducted official business.

This week, she visited her brother in Oregon. The figures don’t include the first family’s scheduled trip back to Martha’s Vineyard this month.

Taxpayer dollars pay most of the cost of transporting the first lady and cover her security.
