ACLU was ‘DWI’

These were some uncivil liberties.

The executive director of the ACLU was hauled over by East Hampton cops and charged with DWI after getting sloshed while celebrating the passage of the gay-marriage law, police and other sources said.

Anthony Romero, 46, was careening into oncoming traffic and onto the shoulder of Pantigo Road — at a tortoise-like 10 mph in a 30-mph zone — while heading back to his East Hampton condo after a night of revelry, police and sources said.

A fed-up driver spotted Romero’s slow-going Mini Cooper convertible at 1 a.m. June 26, and called authorities.

The Princeton- and Stanford-educated lawyer handled the officer’s demands like a pro — refusing to take a Breathalyzer exam or other sobriety tests, and stalling for time when asked to show his identification, according to a police report.

The Bronx native was charged with misdemeanor DWI, refusal to take a Breathalyzer test, driving on the shoulder, failure to use a designated lane and driving too slowly.

He pleaded not guilty, and is due back in court tomorrow.

“I very much regret that this incident occurred, and look forward to resolving the matter with the authorities,” said the exec, who makes $329,206 a year.

The police said they “inadvertently” omitted Romero from a weekly press-release package that includes details of every DWI charge.
