Whitey Bulger’s girlfriend pleads not guilty

BOSTON – The longtime girlfriend of former Boston crime kingpin James “Whitey” Bulger pleaded not guilty in a five-minute court appearance Thursday to helping him avoid authorities for 16 years.

Catherine Greig, 60, who was arrested with Bulger last June in Santa Monica, Calif., also said she would not cooperate with law enforcement authorities, the Boston Globe reported.

“Not while I’m representing her,” the paper quoted her lawyer, Kevin Reddington, as saying.

Greig was charged with conspiracy to harbor and conceal a fugitive and faces a maximum of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Reddington said he would apply to get Greig released on bail, calling her an “excellent bail candidate” who was “looking forward to putting this behind her … She’s a very strong woman. She’s looking forward to getting out and being with her family,” the paper reported.

US Magistrate Judge Jennifer Boal set the next status hearing for Sep. 29.

Bulger has pleaded not guilty to participating in 19 murders while he was alleged boss of a Boston crime ring in the 1970s and 1980s.
