Plax on playing Giants: ‘Another football game’

If it’s possible for there to be hype for a preseason game, Saturday’s Jets-Giants game will have it.

Jets coach Rex Ryan is sure to take a few digs at the Giants, like he did in his book. And then there’s Plaxico Burress. The Jets new wide receiver will be facing his old team, the one he caught a Super Bowl-winning touchdown for.

After Sunday’s 27-7 victory over the Bengals, Burress was asked if this game holds any special meaning.

“Not at all,” he said. “I’m still in contact with a lot of those guys. I’m still in the area. I get to go out and eat with some of the guys. There’s no animosity toward them at all. They haven’t done anything to me. It’s another football game. I get to go against some of the guys I was going up against in practice for years. I know those guys very well and they know me. It’s going to be a good football game.”

UPDATES FROM OUR JETS BLOG

The Giants will be the home team in this meeting at the newly named MetLife Stadium. The two teams meet in the regular season this year on Christmas Eve. That game is a Jets home game.

* One of the big knocks on Aaron Maybin has been that the 2009 first-round pick does not have a sack in his first two years in the NFL. The new Jets linebacker registered one Sunday night. Even though it doesn’t really count, the former Bills bust was happy to contribute just days after joining the Jets.

“Obviously any time you’re in a game situation you want to do everything you can to win,” Maybin said. “That was a situation where it’s the end of the game, something needs to happen to make sure the nail’s in the coffin and the victory’s in the bag. The fact that I was able to go out and get a sack on a play like that definitely feels good.”

* Joe McKnight may have locked up the No. 3 running back job Sunday. After suffering a concussion against the Texans last week, he rushed for 36 yards on seven carries and scored a touchdown on a 3-yard bootleg pass from Greg McElroy.

“It was great,” Ryan said. “He had that concussion or something the week before, but he ran great.”

* Ryan was not definitive when asked when backup quarterback Mark Brunell, who missed Sunday’s game with a pulled calf, would be back. Ryan is staying away from medical diagnoses after a few training camp miscues.

“It’s hard to say with a calf injury and things,” Ryan said. “I’m not real sure on how long it will be. I hope he’s ready for our first game against Dallas. I’m sure he will be but again, I’ll leave it to the experts, because every time I talk about things, I get it all messed up.”
