Obama approval hits all-time low of 38% in Gallup daily tracking poll

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama’s approval rating hit an all-time low of 38 percent in Gallup’s daily tracking poll Tuesday.

The three day rolling average of voters, surveyed from Aug. 20-22, marked a new low for the president, who has seen his approval numbers steadily decline in the survey since his recent high of 53 percent in May, following the death of al Qaeda leader Usama bin Laden.

Obama’s weakening poll numbers are the result of a slumping economy, stubbornly high unemployment numbers and a recent bruising battle with Republicans in Congress to raise the nation’s debt ceiling.

A separate Gallup survey of registered voters nationwide released Monday showed Obama trailing former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in a hypothetical 2012 matchup, 48 percent to 46 percent, and tied with Texas Gov. Rick Perry at 47 percent apiece.
