NBA Finals expected to switch to 2-2-1-1-1 format

The NBA’s Competition Committee has voted unanimously to change the NBA Finals schedule from its long-standing 2-3-2 format to 2-2-1-1-1.

The owners now have to approve the switch, but are expected to do so. It’s still to be determined whether the change would go into effect beginning in 2014 or 2015.

“The idea was raised at the Competition Committee and was well-received and the committee ultimately unanimously voted to recommend the change in format,” league spokesman Tim Frank said.

The 2-3-2 format cut down on travel for those staging or covering the series, but made it difficult for the team hosting the three middle games of the series to control their home court.

The change would bring the league’s championship series in line with the rest of its playoffs, which use the 2-2-1-1-1 format.

The Boston Herald first reported the committee’s decision.
