Winners & losers from Jets’ defeat: Rough day for Marty, Geno

The Jets had an ugly 38-13 loss Sunday in Nashville to the Titans to fall to 2-2. Here are the Jets winners and losers from the game:

WINNERS

DEMARIO DAVIS – The inside linebacker was all over the field. He made a team-high nine tackles and had one for loss. He was a key to stopping Titans running back Chris Johnson (15 carries, 21 yards). He also showed his coverage skill, moving to the outside at times and staying with running backs and tight ends in coverage. Davis has made a seamless transition to starter.

KELLEN WINSLOW – Hey, look who the Jets remembered was on the team. The Jets found Winslow after forgetting about him the past two weeks. He had six catches for 73 yards on nine targets and picked up a crucial first down before it was called back because of a penalty. He has been everything the Jets could have hoped for, but his health remains a question mark.

NICK FOLK – Kickers need some love, too. Folk has been consistent for the Jets this year, making his first eight field goals. He made two more on Sunday and has become one player the Jets can count on. All of his kickoffs went for touchbacks Sunday, as well.

LOSERS

GENO SMITH – This is an easy one. Rookie or not, the quarterback has to protect the ball and Smith failed miserably at it Sunday. His four turnovers led directly to 28 points. You can’t win football games like that. Smith has some bad habits, like holding the ball with one hand, that he has to break. The Jets need to stick with him, but he can’t keep killing the team with turnovers.

MARTY MORNHINWEG – Mornhinweg can do some things to help Smith. He needs to roll him out a bit and cut the field in half. He can also give him some easy throws to make on the outside. Forget about screens for now. Smith is terrible at them. Mornhinweg did not call a great game Sunday. He got away from the run again and what was up with the fourth-and-1 pitch to Alex Green, who is deep on the depth chart.

VLAD DUCASSE – Two more penalties, a few more blown pass blocking assignments and you have to start wondering if Ducasse will be benched soon in favor of rookie Brian Winters. After a strong start to the season, Ducasse has regressed. The Jets need to keep Smith comfortable and having Ducasse in the middle is not a way to do that.
