Williamsburg has the most households with roommates

Williamsburg is a neighborhood full of “Friends.”

The Brooklyn hipster haven has the highest percentage of households made up of roommates, with 6,110, or 9 percent, of them in the 11211 ZIP code, according to 2010 Census data.

“There’s amenities there, like bars and restaurants, that are likely to be attractive. Once a neighborhood develops a cachet, it snowballs,” said William Helmreich, a City College sociologist.

The East Village and Murray Hill in Manhattan ranked second and third for the most households made up of roommates in the city, the Census data show.

On the other end of the spectrum, Staten Island is the land of marital bliss.

The 10314 ZIP code in the central part of the borough has the highest rate of married households in the city — 17,183, or 20 percent of the total.

Borough Park, Brooklyn, was second, followed by Forest Hills, Queens.

“Those neighborhoods are all family oriented with a lot of private houses,” Helmreich explained.

Compared with the rest of the country, New York City residents are much more likely to live alone, especially when it comes to single women.

About 19 percent of women live solo in the city, eclipsing the 16 percent who are married with children, the data show.

Single men account for 14 percent of city households.

Many single women living alone are older, widowed or divorced, said Peter Francese, a demographic trends analyst for Ogilvy & Mather.

“The number of singles is growing quite rapidly. It’s a subculture,” he said.
