Stolen van eyed in terror scare recovered, was swiped for tools

One of the two vans stolen from a Queens construction company working at the World Trade Center site has been recovered, police said.

It had apparently been swiped for its tools.

The van belongs to the Tully construction company – which is doing road repairs at Ground Zero – and was initially reported missing Sept. 2 after it disappeared from another job site on 94th Street near Grand Central Parkway in Elmhurst.

The crooks apparently used keys hidden on a ladder to start the truck and drive off – with $75,000 worth of tools inside.

Cops discovered the van Saturday at 10:45 p.m. ditched in front of 147-09 Coolidge Ave. in Hillcrest. It was empty, said a police spokesman.

“Those tools are all gone. The investigators believe that it was probably just a theft for the tools. So that leaves one of the construction vans still outstanding,” Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said to NY1 during an interview earlier today.

Cops also are continuing to keep an eye out for another stolen vehicle, a white 2007 Ford Econoline with Oklahoma plates, which was taken from a Budget car-rental outfit in Jersey City on Aug. 20, Kelly said.

“The license plate is in our license-plate readers…so we’re looking for that vehicle,” he said.
