Ex-WWE chief McMahon to run again for Conn. Senate seat

HARTFORD, Conn. — Former WWE CEO Linda McMahon will make a second run for the United States Senate in Connecticut, the Hartford Courant reported Monday.

McMahon, 62, a Republican who lost to Connecticut’s Democratic senator Richard Blumenthal in 2010, will announce her candidacy for the seat being vacated by Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman at an event in Southington, Conn., Tuesday.

In a campaign release announcing her candidacy Monday, McMahon — wife of famed wrestling promoter Vince McMahon — touted her private sector experience, saying, “I’m a job creator, I’m not a politician.”

Despite pouring over $50 million of her own money into the 2010 campaign, McMahon lost to Blumenthal in the traditionally blue state by 55 percent to 43 percent.

McMahon’s most notable opposition in the 2012 Republican primary will be former Congressman Chris Shays, who announced his entry into the race in August.

Shays, a moderate, represented Connecticut for 23 years in the House of Representatives before being voted out of office in the 2008 elections.

The Democratic frontrunner is US Rep. Chris Murphy.

Lieberman announced in January that he would retire. He will have served 24 years in the Senate when his term ends in 2012.
