LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ — About 40 students at a New Jersey university were hospitalized following a suspected norovirus outbreak, the university said Thursday.
The students from Rider University’s Lawrenceville campus complained of symptoms associated with a gastrointestinal illness before being transported to local hospitals for treatment late Wednesday.
Some of the affected students have been discharged from the hospital and returned to the campus.
It comes a week after an ongoing norovirus outbreak at the nearby Princeton University.
Norovirus is a highly-contagious infection that causes diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and stomach cramps, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
Rider said its food service and custodial service were taking the “necessary precautions” to avoid the outbreak spreading by cleaning all residence hall bathrooms and other areas.
Classes will continual as scheduled, the university added.
